Paintings are a form of visual art that captures the expression of ideas and emotions on a two-dimensional surface. Artists use the elements of shape, colors, line, tones, and textures in unique ways to produce paintings that convey sensations of movement, volume, space, and light – traditionally on a flat surface.

Concept Development

The three fine arts of painting, sculpture, and architecture are sometimes also called the “major arts”, with “minor arts” referring to commercial or

decorative art styles. Architecture is the only form of fine visual art with a sense of utility or elements of practicality.

Construction Documentation

painting, the expression of ideas and emotions, with the creation of certain aesthetic qualities, in a two-dimensional visual language

The elements of this language—its shapes, lines, colours, tones, and textures—are used in various ways to produce sensations of volume, space, movement, and light on a flat surface.

Design Development

The goal of this unit is to introduce students to the basic elements of art (color, line, shape, form, and texture) and to show students how artists use these elements in different ways in their work.
Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a solid surface (called the “matrix” or “support”).
